Going Undercover to Bring Down the Puppy Farmers

Undercover RSPCA Special Operations Unit inspector lifts the lid on what it is like to expose callous puppy dealers.

“As a Special Operations Unit Inspector investigating the puppy trade comes as quite a challenge. The activity of selling puppies in itself is not illegal yet the volume of suffering puppies can be staggering.

The first thing that becomes very apparent with some of the cases I’ve investigated is that these poor puppies are nothing but a commodity to the dealers.

“The members of the public buying the dogs are nothing but a target, a cash cow, a means to an end. These dealers have forgotten you and your puppy before you walk out the door. Your story and the health of your puppy means nothing to them. Please do not be fooled into thinking it does.

“Walking into the dealer’s premises has at times been quite impressive. The level of organisation required to achieve high turnover puppy sales is considerable. We have found large numbers of mobile phones with initials of dog breeds on the back. This system is so the dealers knows when the YT phone rings they need to talk about Yorkshire Terriers or the POM phone rings they talk about Pomeranians.

“It takes a degree of skill to keep pulling the wool over buyers eyes all day everyday. From answering the phones when buyers respond to the fluffy adverts to arranging the sales with enough time allowed for each person to believe they have had a genuine experience and not bump into the next buyer on their way out.

“The stories as to why the bitch can’t be viewed are plausible. The ‘pedigree’ papers are high quality glossy brochures with professionally printed embossed certificates.

“To see such high volumes of very young puppies in the dealers kennels is just heartbreaking. All each puppy wants is to be cuddled, loved and feel safe like it did before being prematurely wrenched away from it’s mother. If only they could tell you of the traumatic journey they have already made in their short lives.

“The cheapest puppies that make the highest profits come from Eastern Europe and Ireland. The disease risk associated with importing these puppies is very high. Not only to the dogs themselves but to the public of the UK. For example some of these puppies are brought in from Rabies endemic countries. Many carry zoonotic diseases such as Campylobacter and Giardia. Also skin conditions such mange and ringworm.

“It feels good as an SOU Inspector to know that the RSPCA will now care for and do our very best to find each one a loving new home, but I can’t help but wish there wasn’t such a demand for these puppies in the first place.

“It’s a bitter pill for an RSPCA inspector to swallow to know that our animal centres are bursting at the seams with unwanted dogs yet these organised criminals are literally bringing these puppies in by the bucket load and making thousands of pounds a week exploiting them and the British public.

When taking witness statements from the buyers it is obvious that these puppies very quickly become more than just a pet, they became a member of their family.

“When the puppy becomes ill or dies the buyers are left devastated. One of the most upsetting stories I heard was one of a five-year-old little boy finding his beloved first pet dying in a pool of its own blood only 24 hours after purchase. This little boy’s puppy died at the vets and he suffered night terrors as a result.

“Not only have the buyers been conned out of hundreds of pounds when buying the puppy but they are often left with huge vets bills to pay, whether the puppy survives or not.

“These buyers are not foolish. They are ordinary hard working people who genuinely wanted to give a dog a good home.

“The well written adverts, the fake documentation and the façade of authenticity that these dealers create leads the buyers to believe they are purchasing a well breed, pedigree puppy from a loving UK home. They couldn’t be more wrong.”

This RSPCA inspector’s identity has been concealed for their own security.

The RSPCA is now launching the #ScrapThePuppyTrade campaign, calling on the UK government to introduce the ‘Puppy Dealers Act’ in England to stop the unscrupulous trade in puppies. The charity believes huge numbers of sick, under-age and dying puppies – sold to unsuspecting buyers for huge profits, and most likely costing the economy huge sums in untaxed income – are being trafficked into the UK each year.

Please visit www.rspca.org.uk/scrapthepuppytrade to sign the petition and show your support.

  • Puppies Not as Important as Scrap Metal According to the Law

Puppies Not as Important as Scrap Metal According to the Law

RSPCA launches #ScrapThePuppyTrade campaign to bring in laws to protect puppies from callous and cruel puppy dealers.

The RSPCA has today issued a call for the UK govt to act more decisively in preventing the sick trade of puppy farming. The charity says:

Puppies are being treated worse than scrap metal, according to the RSPCA which today launched a petition calling on the UK Government to clamp down on people selling sick dogs in England.

Due to its low cost, low risk and high yield appeal, puppy dealing is an attractive option for people willing to make money at the expense of puppies’ health and welfare and the heartache of families up and down the country.

    puppy photo

The charity says that more laws exist to regulate the trade in scrap metal than the puppies and has launched a petition calling on the Westminster to introduce the ‘Puppy Dealers Act’ in England and clampdown on puppy dealers in the same way.

RSPCA chief vet James Yeates said: “Puppy trafficking is big business with dealers getting rich and leaving a trail of dead puppies and heartbroken families in their wake.

“We believe these poor pups are bought in bulk by dealers looking for the highest profit margin. In many cases the puppies are too young to be away from their mothers and are sick when they are loaded onto vans, before travelling hundreds of miles.

“In 2013 the government brought in new laws to tackle the criminal scrap metal trade in England. But now it’s puppies who are being traded like scrap with no regard for their welfare, or even if they live or die.

“It is far too easy to sell puppies and current laws are failing puppies and their parents. The RSPCA wants to see Westminster treat the issue of puppy dealing in England as seriously as they did scrap metal and license anyone who sells a puppy.”

The RSPCA is calling for mandatory licensing for anyone selling puppies in England to try to hit puppy trade as a whole – from organised illegal trafficking to opportunistic backstreet breeding. This would mean:

    ● Anyone selling a puppy must have a licence.

    ● Strong penalties & fines for anyone caught selling a puppy without a licence.

    ● A national database of puppy sellers (funded by licence fees) to aid enforcement.

    ● All internet and offline advertisers (like Pets4Homes, PreLoved, Friday Ad) must display the licence number of the seller in order to list an advert.

“While this would not stop illegal trading altogether, it would help to remove the huge layer of unregulated puppy dealing we’re currently battling, it would give local authorities the tools they need to act and improve protections for puppy buyers,” added James.

In response to a survey* carried out on behalf of the RSPCA in June 2015, more than 2 million (2,040,000) people said they had bought a puppy in the last year. The RSPCA believes that huge numbers of puppies are being trafficked into the country from other EU countries to meet the high demand for pedigree and designer cross-breed puppies in the UK.

Only 63% of adults who have purchased a puppy within the last year surveyed were able to say they were confident that the person they bought the puppy from bred the puppy.

This week the RSPCA uncovered the deception by one set of dealers who made around £140,000 a month in undeclared cash duping unsuspecting members of the public and selling them sick and suffering puppies.

Under different guises this trio lied to buyers, telling them the puppies for sale had been bred in a homely, family environment and were the first litter. The reality was that weekly deliveries of pups arrived via the ferry from the Republic of Ireland and be kept in pods at a ‘holding’ address while advertised on the internet, before being sold from a network of rented residential properties set up to look like family homes.

Puppies that died were callously dumped in wheelie bins.

One victim of the deceit was Leanne Lamont from Glasgow (pictured). Her young Pomeranian puppy died in her arms just days after she travelled to England and unknowingly bought him from the underground puppy dealing ring.

Leanne said: “I found the advert for the puppies online and everything seemed really good. They would only sell to loving homes, they would show outstanding examples of how tiny puppies should be bred and cared for. They seemed perfect.

“When I arrived at the house I was met by a woman who told me her auntie was the breeder. The house was very clean and everything looked fine. She gave the impression these puppies were coming from a loving family home.”

However Nacho was seriously ill and just days later took a turn for the worse and started having seizures and Leanne made the difficult decision to put her pet to sleep.

She said: “He was incredibly ill and I didn’t want him to be in pain any more. I held him in my arms. He was just so tiny. All skin and bones. He was still gorgeous but just so very ill. The vet gave him the injection and he died there in my arms.”

“They told me Nacho was 12 weeks old when I picked him up but I think he was closer to six weeks old. He was so ill. I just could not believe someone could be so cruel and calculating as those dealers.”

The RSPCA is now urging people to join help tell Westminster that puppies are more precious than pieces of metal by signing our petition at www.rspca.org.uk/scrapthepuppytrade.

  • Ben Fogle Regrets Not Quitting BBC Crufts Coverage

Ben Fogle Regrets Not Quitting BBC Crufts Coverage

Ben Fogle, the TV presenter and adventurer has revealed his regrets at not quitting in his role as Crufts TV anchor in protest over the widespread concern over animal welfare problems associated with the event.

The presenter, son of vet and author Bruce Fogle, says he had reservations about the event but continued to present the show for two years, but that he had supported the BBC in its decision to stop broadcasting Crufts after the furore caused by the documentary Pedigree Dogs Exposed, which brought many serious ethical and welfare concerns in to the mainstream.

“In retrospect I probably should have stopped it sooner because I also don’t think that dogs should be bred for pure show,” he explained to the Cheltenham Literature Festival.

“In some ways I regret that I didn’t make that decision myself, I waited for other people at the BBC to make that decision for me.”

Fogle explained that he had also discussed with his father the ethical connotations of taking the job in the first place.

“Before I took that job I asked dad what he thought and he highlighted these issues about dogs being bred for aesthetics rather than health,” he said.

“Dad and I have had many chats about this over the years because I also have my reservations now. ”

He emphasised that he felt it was a “great decision” for the BBC to abandon its Crufts coverage following the corporations own investigation in to the show’s impact on the health of many pedigree dogs.

The Cast Away star added: “There are many breeders that really do care about their dogs but there are some of them don’t.

“There are dogs that literally live in cages going from show to show to show.

“Those are big American dog winners who literally live in cages and go back and forth across America. ”

  • Justice for Gizmo, Alfie & Finn – A Shocking Case of Dog Trainer Abuse?

This week we received a communication from the Justice for Gizmo, Alfie & Finn team. Their appeal, below, outlines some truly shocking allegations against a trainer and kennel owner. At the end of this statement is a PDF you can download which contains further information on allegations levelled against Lawrence Moran of Total Dogs Ltd. Be warned, this document contains upsetting images.

Justice for Gizmo, Alfie & Finn: Statement

As part of the ongoing campaign to get justice for the dogs killed, lost and injured while under the care of Lawrence Moran at Total Dogs Ltd, there will be another protest taking place at his property.

    Background

In August 2015 Gizmo, a male Shih Tzu who was staying at Total Dogs Ltd was reported missing by Moran but after a month long search it was discovered that Gizmo was actually mauled to death and was never missing. Moran had tried to cover up his death by disposing of his body and concocting a story that he had ran away. Also in August, Finn a healthy 3 year old Chihuahua allegedly died of a heart attack whilst staying with Moran at his boarding kennels. Finn’s body has never been recovered. In March 2014 Alfie, a male Yorkshire Terrier was staying with Moran when he told his owner’s that he had ran away. Alfie has never been seen again and Moran has since admitted to his death but will not disclose how he died or say where his body is. Since the plight of these 3 dogs has come to light there have now been over 30 reported cases of neglect or abuse suffered to dogs at the hands of Lawrence Moran.  Please find attached a list of allegations. This list is still ongoing with people coming forward to share their stories every week.

Lawrence Moran is clearly a danger to any animal in his care, the evidence against him and the lies he has told are overwhelming. We want answers, what really happened to Gizmo, Alife and Finn and where are their bodies!? Why are the council still letting Lawrence Moran board dogs at his property!?

He does not have a dog boarding licence and there have been ongoing planning concerns for his boarding facilities at his current property, yet he is still trading!

    http://www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/news/liverpool-news/netherton-kennel-owner-ordered-close-10037753

We would urge the council to act immediately so that no more dogs suffer at hands of Lawrence Moran.

We have set up an online petition calling for the RSPCA to ban Lawrence Moran from owning and working with animals, this has now reached over 15,731 signatures.

    https://www.change.org/p/rspca-ban-lawrence-moran-of-total-dogs-ltd-from-owning-and-working-with-animals

We have also set up a Facebook page calling for Justice for Alife, Gizmo and Finn, the three dogs who went into Lawrence Moran’s care and sadly never returned to their owners.

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/1470187679954229/

If you require any further information please reply to this email address.

Please note that the full names and contact details of the owners will be available upon request.

Please help us to get justice and prevent any more dogs from suffering.

    Many Thanks,
Justice for Gizmo, Alfie and Finn

  • Experts Warn Central Heating Could Trigger Increased Risk of Parasites at Home

As the central heating dial is turned up across the UK, experts are warning pet owners about the increased risk of fleas in warm households.

New research carried out by Bayer Animal Health for its ‘Home Invaders’ campaign, has shown that a third of pet owners are unaware that switching on the heating in the autumn and winter months can present an ideal breeding ground for fleas and where a flea infestation occurs, warm conditions can lead to flea pupae hatching in the home.

Parasitologist Ian Wright from the European Scientific Counsel Companion Animal Parasites (ESCCAP) UK and Ireland says: “As long as the humidity remains over 75 per cent and temperatures don’t exceed 30°C then for fleas, the warmer the better. Fleas can complete their life cycle in less than 3 weeks at 29 °C so the warmer the house is, the faster they will reproduce up to that point. It should also be said, that fleas can still breed at 17 °C, just at a slower rate.”

According to the research, more than a third of pet owners turn up their heating in the autumn and winter months to between 21°C and 25°C, providing an optimum temperature for fleas to breed in. The study also revealed that one in 10 pet owners have noticed fleas on their pet and in the house during autumn and winter months, indicating they are not seeking preventative treatment at this key time of year.

    dog photo

It is estimated that 95 per cent of the flea population in a home can be found within carpets and soft furnishings, which is perhaps no surprise when almost half of owners admit sharing a bed with their pet and three quarters allow their cats to sleep on their sofa.

Furthermore, 27 per cent of pet owners seek parasite treatment advice online before going to their vet and 10 per cent only ever treat their pets when they see fleas. Worryingly, half of pet owners were completely unaware their pet had fleas until they were shown by a vet. Pet owners are reminded that while the web is a useful resource for gaining background information discussing an effective parasite protection plan with your local vet, will allow you to tailor the requirements for you and your pet.

Paul Manktelow, Veterinary Surgeon, founder of Vital Pet Health and co-presenter of the Home Invaders documentary, says: “There is a high probability your dog or cat will have had fleas or worms at some point in their life but depending on the degree of the infestation you may not have realised how many live hidden away in your home. It is important to speak to your vet about receiving the right preventative treatment to stop these infestations.”

Richard Wall, Professor of Zoology at Bristol University, says: “Only 1-5 per cent of the flea population is actually represented by the adults on the pet and is really just the tip of the iceberg. The remaining 95 per cent is hidden in the environment. They may be found in a wide variety of locations within the domestic environment, including wooden flooring and car upholstery.”

Vicky McAlister, Senior Product Manager at Bayer Animal Health, comments: “In order to keep pets and families healthy it’s of vital importance to not only kill the existing parasites, but also prevent the parasite lifecycle from continuing. The best way to prevent fleas and worms from spreading is to use an all year round protection plan.”

‘Home Invaders’ is a national campaign which is shining a light on the fleas and intestinal worms that live on our pets and in our homes, and is part of Bayer Animal Health’s wider ‘It’s a Jungle Out There’ parasite protection initiative.

Dog Owners Warned Colder Weather Outdoors Could Trigger Parasite Outbreak at Home

Dog owners are being warned by experts that turning the dial on the central heating up to combat the colder weather outdoors could trigger a flea outbreak indoors as the parasite enjoys its warmer surroundings.

  • Ricky Gervais Tweet Helped Animal Rescue Raise Three Times as Much Funds to Help Feed Starving Dogs

British comedian and animal advocate Ricky Gervais has shown his support for many animal welfare campaigns and openly admitted his fans and followers on social media make a real difference sharing his posts, but all the same it’s heartening to read that after a trip to the Emmy’s two social media posts from the man himself have resulted in treble the amount of funds raised to help feed the forgotten and starving animals at the Odai shelter in Romania.

The fundraising page was set up by K-9 Angels who were alerted of the neglected dogs in the Odai shelter in Romania last week and immediately got to work to raise funds for food, beds, bowls and medical care to help support Paws2rescue on the ground in Romania. It was an amazing team effort and within days a good amount of money raised.

Ricky Gervais showed his support over social media and shared the K-9 Angels plea to help the dogs of the Odai shelter crisis and his actions dramatically increased the amount of funds raised to help the Odai dogs.

The Tweet and Facebook post from Ricky Gervais said:

“OK. That’s The Emmys done. Now back to important stuff. Emergency food & aid for dogs at Odai public shelter, https://www.youcaring.com/the-dogs-of-odai-434412#.VgAqpKXS5_4.twitter… pls RT”

The tweet received over 600 retweets and took the funds raised from £3,000 to £14,500 which was incredible. Within days the donations had trebled and Ricky, along with the donors, had literally helped to feed 650 dogs. These dogs will need ongoing food sent and as well as sanitiser, beds and medical care.

K-9 Angels aim to raise a minimum of £30k to purchase food and medical supplies and beds for a whole year.

As this was a crisis we had to move fast to make sure the first food packages where delivered, said Victoria Eisermann, founder of K-9 Angels, who flew out to Romania to help deliver emergency supplies purchased with the money raised with Ricky Gervais’s help while team K-9 got to work ordering additional supplies. It was all systems go to help the dogs of Odai.

It was emotional but at the same time uplifting to be able to deliver food to the Odai dogs. Orders have been made for sanitise and beds which will be delivered very soon. Victoria says, “We will continue to raise funds to be able to feed the dogs for a year and hopefully treat some of the dogs medically.”

Speaking of the power of social media and the cause a spokesperson for K9-Angels said: “A very HUGE THANK YOU to EVERYONE who donated and raised funds to help the Odai dogs and special thanks to Ricky Gervais for sharing our posts which was a MASSIVE help to these dogs! Amazing team work!”

To help give the dogs of Odai a better future, show your support and donate to the cause. Visit the fundraising page here: https://www.youcaring.com/the-dogs-of-odai-434412

  • Hero Dog Saves Cats Dumped in Crisp Box

The RSPCA is appealing for information after an unlikely hero came to the rescue of a cat and her kittens which had been dumped in a crisp box in Middlesbrough.

The terrified trio had been left to die, trapped in a box with no food and water and dumped in bushes in a park under the cover of darkness.

By an incredible stroke of luck the cats were sniffed out and saved by Vader the dog who was out on a late night walk with her owner Sharon.

Sharon Smith, who lives near Pallister Park in Middlesbrough, said: “I had been throwing the ball for her, she went into the bushes to get it and I could she was nudging a box and whining. I knew it must be something important because she’d left her ball behind and she’s crazy about her ball.

“I went over to take a look could see there were some holes in the box and it was moving so I called my son and he came and helped me take Vader and the box home.”

Sharon was stunned when she opened the taped-up Doritos box and found a tortoiseshell cat and two ginger tabby kittens inside.

She said: “When I pulled off the tape and opened the box I saw the cat and kittens inside and I was shocked. They were terrified. It was a small box for them, it was just heartbreaking.

“It’s is disgusting that anyone would dump them like that. It’s absolutely appalling.”

The mother cat, who is thought to be between one and two-years-old, and her kittens who are thought to be about eight-weeks-old, were taken to the vets to be checked over and are now in RSPCA care.

RSPCA Inspector Emma Stainthorpe said: “The box was very small for the three of them, there was no food or water and the bottom of it was soiled with urine.

“The mother cat was not microchipped so we do not know who her owner is. She is friendly so it would appear she’s been handled and was someone’s pet. It’s really important that people get their cats neutered if they do not want kittens.

“Vader is such a lovely little dog, without her these little kittens may not have survived. She really is the hero of the hour.”

Vader,a five-year-old white Staffordshire Bull Terrier named after the Star Wars villain Darth Vader, is being spoiled rotten as a reward for finding the dumped cats.

Proud owner Sharon added: “I wouldn’t have looked in the box unless Vader had brought my attention to it. I thought it was just rubbish.

“I don’t know what would have happened to those poor kittens if Vader hadn’t found the box, I dread to think.

“Thank goodness for Vader, she really is a hero. I’ve given her three new tennis balls as a treat for finding the kittens as she was so focused on the box she lost her ball.”

Anyone with information about who abandoned the kittens late on Tuesday 22 September can contact the RSPCA appeal line on 0300 123 8018 and leave a message for Inspector Emma Stainthorpe.

Dog Nearly Dies After Choking on Pig Treat

PDSA vets have saved the life of a dog who literally bit off more than she could chew after getting a pig’s trotter stuck in her oesophagus and a pig’s tail in her stomach.

Maggie, a one-year-old Bullmastiff, was rushed to Cardiff PDSA Pet Hospital because she was retching and was in distress, after devouring her piggy treats.

PDSA vets x-rayed Maggie and decided to operate after confirming the extent of the blockage.

PDSA nurse, Karen Jones, said: “Maggie was panting heavily and had a high temperature when she first came in.

“We warned Maggie’s owner of the high risks when operating under general anaesthetic. But it was the only way we could get the pig’s trotter out as it was lodged so far down her oesophagus. We also removed the pig’s tail that was in her stomach, as it may not have passed through Maggie’s digestive system safely.

“Maggie was kept in overnight but made a remarkable recovery and was able to go home the next day with a course of antibiotics.”

Karen added: “We always advise owners not to feed any type of bones to pets and this case highlights the dangers of giving such treats. We’re thankful to funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery, which is helping us to educate owners on the type of foods and occasional treats it is safe to give.”

Maggie’s owner, Christine Ramsay, said she was horrified about what happened, and is warning others about the dangers of feeding such treats.

“We’ve fed Maggie pigs’ trotters before and she’s been fine, as she normally chews them. But this time she wolfed it down and it got stuck. We were so worried about her, she’s our baby.

“We can’t thank PDSA vets enough, they did an amazing job. We are so relieved that Maggie is back to her mad, happy self.”

Meet Our New Hero – An 80 Year Old Texan Who Build a Train for His Rescue Dogs

When 80-year old Texan, Eugene Bostick, retired he had no plans to spend his days taking in abandoned dogs but when residents of Fort Worth, or cities nearby, began abandoning dogs near a barn he owns with his brother (located on a dead end street) he found an unexpected calling when he began taking care of the dogs others no longer wanted.

Speaking with The Dodo recently Mr Bostick said: “People sometimes come by and dump dogs out here, leaving them to starve. So, we started feeding them, letting them in, taking them to the vet to get them spayed and neutered. We made a place for them to live.”

Tiffany Johnson, who says Mr Bostick is the coolest guy eventually built up the courage to ask him to take a photograph of his custom made train which she then shared on Facebook and we’re so pleased she did.

Speaking to The Dodo about why he built the train, Eugene said: “One day I was out and I seen this guy with a tractor who attached these carts to pull rocks. I thought, ‘Dang, that would do for a dog train,’” said Mr Bostick. “I’m a pretty good welder, so I took these plastic barrels with holes cut in them, and put wheels under them and tied them together.”

We salute you Eugene. The world needs people like you.
